The Center for Biotechnology and Nanotechnology
Biotechnology is emerging as a promising economic sector expecting its contribution upto50% of world's economy in the near future. The novel techniques in Biotechnology like r-DNA technology, Genetic engineering, Transgenic and cell tissue culture have far reaching applications in Agriculture, Pharmaceuticals, Diagnostics, Bio energy, Natural resources conservation and Management. The field of molecular medicines has major contributions in the correction of diseases like AIDS, Cancer, Diabetes and ailments of vital organs such as Liver, Kidney and Heart. Modern vaccines and antibiotics developed through Biotechnology tools and techniques have proved to be a boon to mankind.
The Department of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering has developed into a center of excellence for teaching and research in Biotechnology with reputed scientists and engineers who have excelled in their respective fields of specialization. The Center for Biotechnology and Nanotechnology (CBN) has been formed under the department of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering. The primary aim of this center is to carry out applied research in areas which will be beneficial to the industry and society in general. The Department has signed an MOU with Oushadi, Thrissur and received government funding (AYUSH, GOI; Principal Investigator – Dr.Seema Nair.P) for carrying out research in the field of Ayurvedic formulations. A project on genetic mapping of the various communities is going on at this center under the guidance of Dr.Seema Nair. More than 200 blood samples have already been analysed and some interesting results have been obtained which has to be interpreted on the basis of History
and Anthropology. The research findings have been published in an international journal. The present infrastructure of the department includes PCR, Blotting apparatus, gel documentation, Biofermenter, trinocular research microscope, Inverted phase contrast microscope and magnified imaging system, deep freezers (-70◦C and -20◦C), UV-VIS spectrophotometer, GC, HPLC, automatic autoclave, viscometer, Lyophiliser etc.
